Instruments as controllers?
Together with Sam van Tienhoven, we went to research the possibilities of using music to control games. In our case it was a simple platform game: Super Mario Bros. We were interested in how effective controlling a game with music would be compared to conventional controls. The reason we wanted to research this is because we think that it adds an extra dimension to the gameplay. It can stimulate musical practice and development besides just being fun. Usually games about music are the other way round, a controller is used to make music. In our case we used a real instrument to control a non-musical game.
